For the last post, I will bring you to a broader look at politics and technology.

What makes the life different these days?

In the past, the big change in people life depends on politics and politicians. Nowadays, the information technology revolution has changed the way human beings, it embeds in every time and everywhere; education, medicine, transportation, etc. Now even the way we raised our child.

When taking technology into account, it makes politics seem to be something obsolete comparing to technology industries that something comes in and out the industries, it tends to be cheaper and cheaper, which support the ways we live.
In some situations, technology can be considered like a shortcut comparing to politics considered as a normal path.

In the countries that lack basic infrastructure – an accessible transport network, a reliable legal system, a usable banking sector – phones enable people to create their own networks of ownership and exchange.”

Mobile banking eliminates the need for cash and allows people in rural areas to transfer and receive money without exorbitant fees or the expense of traveling to a remote village to deposit or receive cash. And according to the World Bank, mobile signals now cover 90 percent of the world’s poor.

This makes it possible for the people who live in isolated rural areas to do business outside of their local communities. Technology caused this to happen; government didn’t.

In my opinion, sometimes government does not do what they should do while they tried to use the Populism Policy, like in Thailand, that uses a lot of money to invest in Tablet and give it to a children, while does not have a clear regulation/control over its uses. They can use resource in hand first and manage it in an optimal way. I do not know how it happened in Belgium, China or your country, Let’s share!

One Tablet per Child: Thailand and Peru Case Study

One Tablet per Child: Thai Classroom

Back in 2011, Thai Government leading by PM. Yingluck, decided to make a deal to bring an estimated one million tablets to student at the ages of 6 to 8 to all the school students in Thailand.

The purpose of this campaign is not just an e-book for students but a tablet. They can use it to surf the internet, play interactive educational games while at the same time using it in art and writing skills. In  addition, to remove the gap of education opportunities. And the campaign lunched it first distribution in 2012.

At that time, we do not know if it is the right decision or not. There are many factor involved, control of use, teacher skills, how to train the teachers.

But there is a Thai Research on the outcome of the students using computers/technologies:

The finding shows that using computers for educational purposes has small, but it also has positive effects on student performance (between one to two points for sciences and math subjects).

There is evidence similar to the Thai one in Peru, where they give the tablets to student as well. They have the research result in two group of students:

The researchers compared and analyzed the data and discovered that there was not a significant difference between the test and control groups.

The outcome of the research tends to have the positive result, but it does not seem to be significant. There is also a further research for a long term use of tablet, they suggests on developing contextualized content, ensuring usability, providing teacher support, and assessing learning outcomes.

In my opinion, I, myself as a Thai, do not agree with the campaign of giving over the tablet to a school students especially at their early age, 6-8 years old. Because they are not capable enough to what they should use for, they should have used it under the parent control or have limit use. In addition, giving over the tablet to school also becomes the responsibility to the teachers which does not seem to be enough for the number of children in Thailand. Also, the issues of technologies skills of the teacher are problem itself. Then, it becomes the cycles of if students has been under control of the purpose of the use.

Moreover, there is still discussion with the outcome of the campaign if it is the students or it is actually a politics game to win the vote. What are you thinking?

Not so fancy but greatly facilitate in “Social Support” works

To be able to access or to approach people with mental illnesses is difficult. Imagine if you have to work in community service, you go everywhere to meet clients in inconvenient place like on the street, talking to them and have to fill-in their information in a place where there is no desk. The tablet can be a great candidate.

The case study of “Laurie Bayless”, a community services, she works with people with mental illness. Some has a problem with socialization. Some even does not have a home. Therefore, she must go in and out the office to meet them, talk to them, let them sigh the papers, and to submit paper to the office works.

In her job, not only the use of tablet instead of the computer, data connection is also important. She can help her clients with general information but it is greatly so important to those people; about living place, food recipe, searching for her client’s symptom, taking pictures of the clients, etc.Other than using the tablet with her client, she uses it with her own works in her car, so she does not need to go back to her office. At the end of the day, she can finish her work in the car.

This kind of tablet ability may not be so fancy to us but it is important support for Laurie. It is not only help Laurie but it can help those people who have difficulties to access information. It just the other way of using tablet.

Tablet VS. Paper: Environment

With accessories for Tablet or Smart Phone these days, it facilitates users for more convenience for smart device to act as everything; music instrument, medical instrument, and other tools like a notebook. Not only for touching/typing on the screen, but for more convenience in the writing with the help of the accessory like Stylus or embedded pen together with paper like application.

Environmental Paper Network has reported that if we produce one paper using all new resource, 0.03 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalents being released into the atmosphere. While an iPad uses about 3 watts per hour, releasing only 0.004 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalents. If you are picky enough to find a recycle paper, 0.017 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalents is released.

If we deeply talk about how one tablet can be produced, it is going to be a lengthy discussion about if it is really save the environment. BUT think of you already have one smart device.

We may conclude that we tried to use the resource in hand for most powerful as possible. As everyone has a smart device, you may use it sometime instead of using paper. Also, you may use your tablet as long as possible before buying a new one is also help.

Developing Fine Motor Skill in Children with Tablet

The tablet can help developing children’s motor skills. Fine Motor can be simply known as Small Muscles. It includes the muscle in fingers, hands and their arms to control/use tools or material. This skill is an important skill for writing, drawing, and other activities in children’s every-day life.

The use of technology to encourage children in commitment to the activities

The director of therapy of therapy at Associates in Pediatric Therapy in Louisville, Ky., she purchased her first iPad in 2010 shortly thereafter, and has been using these devices in her therapy sessions ever since.

The application in the tablet or the tablet itself makes it more of an interactive experience. The most important thing is the input characteristic is the “Touch Input”. This aspect can help children in the motor skill as well. We can illustrate that when we touch the screen children have to:

Isolating their index finger: by pressing icons on a smart phone or tablet while playing games. This helps children to be able to move one finger apart from the rest of the hand/fingers.

Pushing button: when pushing the button/screen, it develops motor skill like push-button activities This helps the strength and motor control.

Art Therapy

Not only art can be use as the form of indication to the mind. It can also used as the mind therapy.

Cathy Malchiodi Art therapy is “a modality for self-understanding, emotional change and personal growth.”

The art therapy can be used in many groups of people from the children to elderly, prisoner, and even physical disability people to psychological disorder.

Inner Experience

Art Therapy is more about inside of yourselves including your feeling, your imagination and what you have seen. From the art it shows the image of your mind rather than what that person have seen from the outside world.

Art Therapy Exercise

Emotion: drawing a line can simply show how you’re feeling. The result of a research shows that Sad are mostly expressed by downward curving lines.
Happy or positive emotion had curvilinear and upward movement.
Depressed can also include downward movement.
Excited are illustrate with more outward-reaching lines and shapes.

Drawing and thinking

Drawing can indicate emotions, self-esteem, and self competency as well as one’s personality. Strong emotion will come in form of image not from word.

Children tend to receive art therapy. Because it can help children in creating self- expression, explore conflict, and exercise the control over the reality that they perceive. Art provide safe and enjoyable. This means that it encourage children to explore, make decision, and solve problem. It illustrates their inner world without having to rely on words.

It is an informal way of understanding of what the children’s struggles and their internal world. Drawing can use to help the child gain insight and to review progress through drawing records. Especially, children who are shy, quiet, impulsive have speech and language difficulties.

There is a case study of 7-year old student who lost her mother and have a problem with school. In the drawing, the school can perceive that that student has the feeling of helplessness, anxiety, and need to feel the important in connection to other people.
